Samba 4: Active Directory Domain Controllers
Author: Jelmer Vernooij
For the last 8 years the Samba team has been working on the next version of Samba, version 4.0. The main focus of this new version has been support for operating as domain controller in an Active Directory domain. In the mean time work on the stable Samba 3 branch has continued and diverged.
As of two years ago the Samba team has started releasing alpha versions of Samba 4 and in the last year the first sites have dared to roll it out in production. The development focus has now shifted to reconciling the Samba 3 and Samba 4 code bases and finishing and fixing the bugs discovered in our domain controller implementation.
In this presentation I hope to cover the reasons Samba 4 has taken so long as well as the current status of the project.
